Terms of Service

Effective 26 September 2026 · RootTalk is operated by MJ APPLICATIONS LLC, a Texas limited liability company.

In short

RootTalk helps you explore your FamilySearch tree. It reads your tree. The one thing it can add is a life summary you have read, edited and confirmed — saved to that ancestor’s Memories, and only when you ask for it.

An AI writes the summaries and answers. It can be wrong. Treat everything it says as a starting point for research, never as evidence — verify against the actual records before relying on it or adding it to your tree.

RootTalk is provided as-is, with no warranty, and our liability is limited.

This summary is for orientation only. The full text below is what governs.

1. Agreement

These Terms are a binding agreement between you and MJ APPLICATIONS LLC, a Texas limited liability company (“we”, “us”), governing your use of the RootTalk application. By using RootTalk you accept these Terms. If you do not accept them, do not use RootTalk.

2. What RootTalk is

RootTalk is an independent companion to FamilySearch. It signs you in through FamilySearch, reads your family tree, presents your ancestors one at a time, and uses an AI assistant to summarise and discuss what the records say.

RootTalk writes to your FamilySearch tree in exactly one way. If you choose to, you can save an ancestor’s life summary to their Memories on FamilySearch. Nothing is ever uploaded automatically: you accept FamilySearch’s Content Submission Agreement first, you edit the text yourself, and you confirm a second time before anything is sent. What is uploaded is the text you approved, with a note recording that an AI drafted it and that you checked it.

RootTalk cannot do anything else to your tree. It cannot add, edit, merge, or delete people, relationships, sources, or conclusions, and it cannot change or remove a memory once saved — including one you saved through RootTalk. To edit or delete it, use FamilySearch. When RootTalk surfaces a record hint, it links you to FamilySearch so that you can review and attach it there, under your own account and judgement.

3. Relationship to FamilySearch

We are not FamilySearch International, and RootTalk is not sponsored or endorsed by FamilySearch International or by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beyond our participation in FamilySearch’s developer program. FamilySearch is a trademark of its owner and is used here only to identify the service RootTalk connects to.

Your FamilySearch account remains governed by FamilySearch’s own terms and privacy notice. You are responsible for complying with them. FamilySearch may change or withdraw API access at any time, which may interrupt or end RootTalk’s functionality.

4. Eligibility and your account

You must have your own valid FamilySearch account and be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required in your country, whichever is greater. If you are under 18, you may use RootTalk only with the involvement of a parent or guardian.

RootTalk creates no separate account and never receives your FamilySearch password. You are responsible for activity that occurs through your signed-in session, and for signing out on shared devices.

5. AI-generated content — please read this

Summaries, historical context, suggested research steps, and conversational answers in RootTalk are produced by a large language model. They are generated text, not verified fact, and they carry the known failure modes of such systems.

Verify everything against the underlying records before relying on it, citing it, sharing it, or entering it into your FamilySearch tree. AI output is a prompt for your own research, never a source. We make no representation that it is accurate, complete, or current, and we are not responsible for decisions you make in reliance on it or for changes you make to your tree as a result.

RootTalk is provided for personal, family-history purposes. It is not legal, medical, genetic, financial, or professional advice, and must not be used to establish identity, citizenship, inheritance, or any other legal right.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

7. Content and intellectual property

Genealogical records, memories, and photographs shown in RootTalk belong to FamilySearch and its contributors, and are subject to their terms. We claim no ownership of them and store no copy of them.

The RootTalk application, its name, design, and artwork are ours. These Terms grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use RootTalk for its intended purpose, and nothing more.

AI-generated text is provided to you for your own family-history use. We make no claim of ownership over it and give no assurance that it is original or free of third-party rights.

8. Availability

RootTalk is offered without any guarantee of availability. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it, and it depends on FamilySearch and other third-party services that we do not control.

9. Your data

Our handling of information is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms. In summary: we keep no database of your family tree, and your progress lives on your own device where you can erase it at any time.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

RootTalk is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that RootTalk will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any content or AI output will be accurate or reliable. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, goodwill, or research effort, arising out of your use of RootTalk — including reliance on AI-generated content or changes you make to your FamilySearch tree.

Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to RootTalk will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or fifty United States dollars ($50). These limits apply even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose, and nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

12. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless MJ APPLICATIONS LLC and its members and agents from any claim or demand, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of your use of RootTalk, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right.

13. Termination

You may stop using RootTalk at any time by signing out and clearing your stored progress. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these Terms or if we discontinue the service. Sections 5, 7, and 10 through 14 survive termination.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You and we submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Collin County, Texas, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction. If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in force.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. We will revise the effective date above and, for material changes, notify you in the application before they take effect. Continuing to use RootTalk after that constitutes acceptance.
