A guided walk up your family tree

Know Your Roots

Instead of a pedigree chart you’re expected to navigate on your own, RootTalk walks you up your direct line one person at a time — and an AI guide named Joyce introduces each of them: who they were, where they lived, what the records say.

You’ll need a free FamilySearch account. RootTalk never sees your FamilySearch password.

What RootTalk does

It reads the tree you already have on FamilySearch and turns it into something you actually finish.

One ancestor at a time

Name, dates, places, photos and memories on a single card, with a short history that weaves the facts together. Scroll to meet their parent, and keep going.

Ask Joyce anything

Follow-up questions about a specific ancestor, answered from that person’s actual record. Conversations are saved so you can re-read them.

See where they lived

Every ancestor you unlock placed on a real map by where they died, with a line drawn back to where they were born.

Records waiting for you

FamilySearch’s own record hints, surfaced per ancestor and linked straight back so you can review and attach them yourself.

Give something back

Save an ancestor’s life summary to their Memories on FamilySearch — after you’ve read it, edited it, and confirmed it’s right.

Built to be readable

Text scales up to 1.6×, every layout holds at that size, and there’s a full dark theme. Designed for eyes that have read a lot of records already.

Joyce, RootTalk's AI guide

Meet Joyce

Joyce is RootTalk’s guide. She reads what FamilySearch holds about an ancestor — their dates, their places, their family, the facts other people have recorded — and writes a short introduction to their life and the world they lived in.

She is an AI, and she can be wrong. Everything she writes is labelled as AI-written, and nothing she writes reaches your FamilySearch tree unless you read it, edit it, and choose to publish it yourself.

Built on FamilySearch

RootTalk is a FamilySearch Compatible application, reviewed and approved through FamilySearch’s Solutions Program. You sign in with your own FamilySearch account, your tree stays on FamilySearch, and anything you contribute is posted under your own name.

RootTalk is an independent application operated by MJ APPLICATIONS LLC. It is not FamilySearch, and it is not sponsored or endorsed by FamilySearch International or by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beyond our participation in their developer program. FamilySearch is a trademark of its owner, used here only to identify the service RootTalk connects to.

Your family tree is never copied to our servers. Names, dates, places and photos live in your browser for the session and are gone when you reload.

Every name in your tree was once a whole life

Go and meet them.
